Museum of Sketches - Pietrasanta

The Pietrasanta Bozzetti Museum, (dedicated since 2007 to "Pierluigi Gherardi"), the only one of its kind in the world, is located in the former convent of Sant'Agostino. It was born in 1984, thanks to the initiative of the Danish art critic Jette Muhlendorph. The museum since its inception has been designed to document the activities of the Versilia art workshops. Marble has always been the main tradition of Pietrasanta's workshops since the 14th century. The Muhlendorph had the idea of creating a collection of plaster casts that would document the activity of the artistic workshops illustrating the creation of a work of art, starting from the sketch.

The nucleus of the collection originated when, following the organization of exhibitions and artistic festivals, some sculptors donated sketches and models to the city. At the same time, a photographic and documentary archive was created. From that moment on it was a succession of donations from artists and artisans, which allowed the collection to grow year after year and now more than 700 sketches, models of sculptures by Italian and international artists, mainly in plaster, are on display.

Sono rappresentati, tra gli altri, maestri come Henri Georges Adam, André Bloc, Helaine Blumenfeld, Fernando Botero, Antonio Bozzano, Davide Calandra, Arturo Carmassi, Pietro Cascella, César, Pietro Consagra, Niki De Saint Phalle, Novello Finotti, Jean Michel Folon, Gonzalo Fonseca, Rosalda Gilardi, Emile Gilioli, Gigi Guadagnucci, Jean Robert Ipousteguy, Igor Mitoraj, Costantino Nivola, Isamu Noguchi, Maria Papa, Alicia Penalba, Beverly Pepper, Gio’ Pomodoro, Edoardo Rubino, Carlo Sergio Signori, Ivan Theimer, Giuliano Vangi, Leone Tommasi, Kan Yasuda.

But what are the sketches?

The sketches or Bozzetti, are the origin of the creative idea, on a small scale and the models are in real size. They represent what is the sculptor's initial idea before his translation into a completed work. The dimensions of the sketches vary from a few centimetres to a few metres and are made of various materials, especially plaster. As already mentioned, the museum collection now contains about 700 sketches and models of sculptures by more than 350 Italian and foreign artists, including the most important sculptors of this century, who have worked or still work in the artisan laboratories of the area. Masters such as Henri Georges Adam, André Bloc, Helaine Blumenfeld, Fernando Botero, Antonio Bozzano, Davide Calandra, Arturo Carmassi, Pietro Cascella, César, Pietro Consagra, Niki De Saint Phalle, Novello Finotti, Jean Michel Folon, Gonzalo Fonseca, Rosalda Gilardi, Emile Gilioli, Gigi Guadagnucci, Jean Robert Ipousteguy, Igor Mitoraj, Costantino Nivola, Isamu Noguchi, Maria Papa, Alicia Penalba, Beverly Pepper, Gio’ Pomodoro, Edoardo Rubino, Carlo Sergio Signori, Ivan Theimer, Giuliano Vangi, Leone Tommasi, Kan Yasuda.

The works made on the basis of these sketches are found in museums, collections and parks all over the world, so visiting the exhibition you can have an overview of the various artistic trends that have gone through the twentieth century and thus have a broad and comprehensive view of contemporary sculpture.
