National Archaeological Museum of
Chieti
Since
1959, the National Archaeological Museum of Chieti has been housed in the
neoclassical Villa Frigeri, in the green area of the Villa Comunale. It
represents the most important archaeological collection in Abruzzo, known
internationally for the warrior of Capestrano (6th century BC), a funeral
stele of exceptional importance for the study of the Italic or sannitic
populations, who settled on the territory before the Roman invasion. On the
ground floor there is the section dedicated to Roman iconography in the
region, where the colossal statue of Hercules emerges (I century BC). from the
Alba Fucens excavations. |

Accanto
Penna S. Andrea, Capestrano, Alfedena, Le Castagne, Scurcola Marsicana e
Next
to it is the Roman lapidary, which includes the remarkable burial
bed in bone, found in Collelongo, and the funeral monument of
Lusius Storax. Also on the ground floor is part of the Pansa
collection, a typical example of nineteenth-century collecting (bronzes,
jewellery, glass, ivories), and the numismatic collection, consisting of
about 15,000 pieces from the fourth century BC. to the 19th century. On the
first floor there are exhibits found in proto-historical necropolis of the
Abruzzo territory (Campovalano, Penna S. Andrea, Capestrano, Alfedena, Le
Castagne, Scurcola Marsicana and Pennapiedimonte, Nocciano, Civitella
Casanova); in particular the funerary stelae by Pelle S. Andrea (V century
