Sn the city
of
Siena,
recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the
University of Siena, one of the oldest
universities in Europe, has its seat. A university
that is in third place among generalist universities,
in first place among medium-sized universities, in
first place for liveability and quality of services,
in first place in the ranking of quality of research
in relation to size.

|
All this in the context of a
city like Siena, known everywhere for its enormous landscape, artistic and
historical heritage. All this represents the optimal conditions and premises
to be able to face, in the best way, the commitment to attend the University
of Siena. A university with a strong international vocation. That is its
nature, that is its tradition.
The University of Siena has
always believed in cooperation between universities, and it is because of
this belief that it has created and developed over time a dense network of
agreements with universities around the world. A mobility that involves
teachers and students from different continents. He has signed numerous
agreements for the Erasmus project, including numerous scholarships,
and has signed almost three hundred treaties of didactic-scientific
collaboration with universities in Europe, Africa, Latin America, Russia,
Japan, Canada, the United States and the Middle East.
There are seventy-two foreign
universities with which he collaborates for international doctorates, while
twenty-two are those for international masters courses. It also provides
forty mobility grants each year for research and study activities and for
students, postgraduates and PhD students to universities in the USA, Canada,
Brazil, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, Peru, Mexico, Japan,
Germany, Australia and Chile.
The University of Siena is also
very sensitive to the insertion in the world of work of its students, which
is why it has activated the Placement Office. This service is a fundamental
means, offering itself as an intermediate point for students and graduates
and for companies, becoming a sort of compass for orientation in the world
of work. The objectives of the service are to facilitate access from
university studies by offering consulting, assistance, guidance and
mentoring services, also activating training courses aimed at the
integration of graduates in the professional field, facilitating the meeting
between universities and companies through the carrying out of orientation
traineeships, promoting the research activity of job opportunities and
professional figures that are the most suited to the needs of the market.
The University of Siena, through
the Placement Office, intends to try to shorten the time taken to enter the
labour market and to increase the chances of finding a job in line with the
studies carried out. Still with the aim of supporting its students, the
University of Siena has activated "USiena Welcome? This project has been put
into practice, in collaboration with the support of institutional bodies, in
order to improve, design and build new measures of student citizenship that
are able to meet the needs of small and large students who have chosen to
enrol at the University of Siena, a dynamic, active institution with strong
roots and projected into the future.
History of the University of Siena
The first document known to the
university is a Podestarius decree dated 26 December 1240. This historical
testimony highlights an important detail. In fact, it is clear from the
reading of a Podestarile decree that it was the direct organization of the
Sienese municipality to take an interest in the university, unlike what
happened in Bologna, which was based on the initiative of students, or Paris
which was based on the administration of teachers. In the Podestarile decree
it is noticed that the citizens who provided accommodation to the
schoolchildren had to pay a fee and with the proceeds of this tax the
municipality provided to pay the teachers of the university, chosen
naturally among the best. In the 13th century. In addition to the oldest
juridical school, a grammar school and a medical school had also developed.
In 1321 there was a strong
increase in students from the University of Bologna. After a lively activity
of the Consistory of Siena, the Sienese Studio was finally included, on 16th
August 1357, among the universities of the Holy Roman Empire in a diploma
granted in Prague by Emperor Charles IV. In 1416 the House of Wisdom
was opened and soon became a strong attraction for students from all over
Europe. The evolutionary path of the University of Siena is strongly linked
to the development and cultural tradition of Tuscany, a bond that is still
very strong today. A university that has seen teachers such as Pietro
Ispano, doctor and philosopher, who helped to give prestige to the medical
school and grammar before being elected pope in 1276 under the name of John
XXI, students such as economist Sallustio Bandini who graduated here
in Philosophy and Law, then proposing a series of reforms aimed in
particular to improve the economic situation in southern Tuscany. Still at
the University of Siena, the anatomist and naturalist Paolo Mascagni
graduated and undertook his academic career, famous above all for having
discovered the lymphatic system and for having created the work "Grande
Anatomia? which, accompanied by life-size anatomical tables, has been the
main text for the study of this subject for over a century. And to mention
more recent names, it is enough to remember Salvatore Ottolenghi,
founder of the first "Free Course of the Scientific Judicial Police"
and the promoter of the introduction of fingerprints in judicial
investigations. The University of Siena is a university with a considerable
history and is rich in a great tradition of knowledge, and at the same time
very active in the field of research and innovation. During its centuries of
activity the university has contributed strongly to knowledge and this in
every field of study. Today it is one of the Italian universities that
presents the highest innovative results in research, teaching and services.
