Civic Museum of Siena

In the Palazzo Pubblico is located the Civic Museum of Siena, a series of rooms that house some treasures of art heritage not only in the city but throughout Italy. This museum is accessed from the courtyard of the palace through an iron staircase. This museum was built in 1930 and is located on the first floor of the building. It is divided into several rooms, here you can admire works of art, which start in 1500 and come, for the most part from the Sienese territory.

Sala di Balia - Palazzo Pubblico - SienaIn the Sala del Risorgimento it is possible to admire various works, dating back to 1800, made by Gaetano Marinelli, Alessandro Franchi, Arnoldo Prunai, just to name a few. Also in this room you can admire the splendid sculptures of Giovanni Dupré, real masterpieces. The Sala di Balia or Sala dei Priori is formed by two different sections and its walls are entirely frescoed, to admire the frescoes that trace the life of Pope Alexander III made by Spinello Aretino, to honor this Pope, whose origins were Siena. In the Sala dei Cardinali, on the other hand, it is possible to admire several frescoes, dating back to the 14th century, including the one depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria, St. John and St. Augustine with a devotee. In the Sala del Concistoro it is accessed after having walked through a splendid portal, entirely in marble, created in 1448 by Bernardo Rossellino.

Sala del Mappamondo - SienaThis was the preferred hall for meetings, both during the Medici dominion and during the Republican era. Very particular are the frescoes that recall in an allegorical key the public virtues, the work of Domenico Beccafumi, who through history represents Concordia, Love for the Homeland and Justice.

The main room is called Sala del Mappamondo and among the works, inside, in particular it is possible to admire several frescos and two paintings by Simone Martini, one depicting the Majesty and the other Guidoriccio da Fogliano to the siege of Montemassi. Next to it there is the Sala della Pace or Sala dei Nove, entirely frescoed with allegorical episodes that reproduce the Effects of Good and Bad Government. In the Sala dei Pilastri, on the other hand, we find works by minor artists, to admire the painted Cross, created in 1306 by Massarello di Gilio. If you are visiting this palace you cannot help but climb to the Loggia, from here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Siena and in particular on the Piazza del Mercato. See the pages of Palazzo Pubblico, Sala del Mappamondo and Sala della Pace for further information.
