Pfanner Palace in Lucca

During your walks to the Walls of Lucca you can not help but notice the beautiful garden of Pfanner Palace (Palazzo Pfanner), a building that seems to come directly from a fairytale from how impressive it is. This is one of the oldest palaces in the city, once belonging to the Moriconi family, a powerful family of local merchants, active in the silk industry.

Palazzo Pfanner - Lucca The building dates back to the second half of the seventeenth century (in 1660 to be exact) and at the end of the same century, after the fortune turned its back on the Moriconi, it passed from hand to the Controni family, and was then purchased in the nineteenth century by Felice Pfanner, an Austrian entrepreneur, who built a brewery there. The brewery remained in operation until 1929. Since the 1990s, the Pfanner family, who still own the brewery, have decided to open the building and gardens to the public.

Inside you can enjoy an exhibition of furniture and decorations from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century and there is also an area reserved for medical instruments that belonged to Peter Pfanner, surgeon and mayor of Lucca between 1920 and 1922.

Palazzo Pfanner - Lucca The Italian Garden is the highlight of the entire complex, fascinating and romantic. It is characterized by the presence of several statues and fountains, suggestive scenery of magnolia plants, pines and fruit trees (a beautiful lemon house is poured towards the outer balustrade, the walls). The garden was probably created during the eighteenth century by a collaborator of Filippo Juvarra, one of the greatest Baroque architects of the eighteenth century. The palace is also known for having been used in numerous Italian films, including the Marquis del Grillo with Alberto Sordi  (one of the greatest Italian actors ever).

The opening hours of the Pfanner Palace and its gardens are: from April to October from 10:00 to 18:00.

Entrance only to the palace or only to the gardens costs € 4.50, there is the possibility to buy the combined ticket for € 6.
