The places of Giacomo Puccini in Lucca

Lucca is the birthplace of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini, the father of such immortal operas as La Boheme, Turandot, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. Many foreign tourists who visit the city are attracted by its association with Puccini, whose global popularity is often greater than that it enjoys in Italy itself.

Casa natale Giacomo Puccini - Lucca Along the Via San Paolino, before getting to the magnificent Piazza San Michele, be sure to stop and admire the white marble Church of San Paolino and San Donato, where Puccini played as a child. Next head towards the centre, to the nearby Piazza Cittadella: the elegant gentleman sitting smoking in front of you is Giacomo Puccini and a little further on is the birthplace of the Master, today a museum dedicated to his life and works. The address is Corte San Lorenzo 9 and is shown on the map.

Casa natale Giacomo Puccini - Lucca Puccini was born in this house in 1858 and lived here for most of his youth, before moving to Milan in 1922. Inside you will see the rooms occupied by the Puccini family, the small attic with views over the rooftops and of the Archangel Michele on the nearby church, a view which has hardly changed since Puccini’s days. Puccini struggled to achieve success, which came late at the age of 35. Before that he had written mostly unsuccessful works and his personal and romantic life did not run a smooth course. On display you will find furniture, letters, sheet music, memorabilia, Puccini’s favourite piano and the original dress worn by Turandot’s character in the first showing of the work at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York in 1926.

Casa natale Giacomo Puccini - Lucca Other locations associated with Puccini: the conservatory, which today holds the l'Istituto Musicale Boccherini in Piazza del Suffragio (at the time named the Instituto Giovanni Pacini), the Chiesa di Santi Giovanni e Reparata where Puccini was baptized and where his concerts are still held today (entitled "Puccini and his Lucca"), Torre del Lago, where the artist sought calm and relaxation in the writing of his works (his villa can be found here, the tomb where he was buried, and the great outdoor theatre where the Puccini Festival takes place each summer) and Celle Puccini, a village in Garfagnana, where a small museum shows exhibits about the lives of his ancestors, his family and the composer himself.
