Immersed in a mountain backdrop and completely surrounded by lush
forests, it offers an interesting destination that you should visit,
especially if you love nature and all the outdoor activities that can be
arranged in a place like this. It is a medieval village of rare beauty
that rises in a hilly position, on the spurs of the Tuscan Emilian
Apennines at 410 m. at sea level, halfway between the city of Lucca and
the mountains of Garfagnana. A land where the italian poet Giovanni
Pascoli was adopted, it has been awarded the prestigious tourist
quality labels "One of the most beautiful villages in Italy", "Orange
Flag Touring Club" and "Slow City",
Arrive
in Barga by plane
The nearest
airports to Barga are Pisa and Florence. Pisa Airport (PSA)
is about an hour and a little more by car (about 70 km), also by
train (see below), directed to Barga-Galicano and then by bus
for 11 minutes to Barga center. The Pisan airport is very busy
and has a high transit traffic. The number of airlines is
substantial and increasing, for several Italian and European
destinations. The airport of Florence (FLR), more distant
than the previous one, about an hour and 30 by car (98 km), is
connected with the A11 to Porcari (near Lucca), and from here
with the SS12, while by train you need to get to Lucca, and from
here in 40 minutes to the station of Barga-Gallicano, and again
by bus to Barga center.

Arrive
in Barga by car
Barga is well
connected, with Lucca, the nearest major city, but also with
other cities in Tuscany (Pisa, Florence, Pistoia among others).
Arriving at Barga from Lucca take the state statale 12
and for about 38 km, passing along the various Ponte a
Moriano, Borgo a Mozzano (where you should stop to
visit the famous Devil's Bridge),
Bagni di Lucca (just beyond the towns of Piano della
Rocca and Fornoli); then continue along the SP 20
(Via Lodovica) and follow the SR 445 for Ponte all'Ania,
touching the outskirts of Fornaci di Barga, and then Loppia (below
and above), and finally the SP7 before arriving at Barga
Vecchia. At the entrance of the historic center you will
find several parking lots (see section
Where to park in Barga).
Reaching Barga from the major Tuscan cities is equally easy, just
get to Lucca and from there continue to Barga, so even if you were to
arrive from
Versilia or from places like
Sarzana, in Liguria, unless you choose the
path slightly more winding that joins the territory of the Apuan Alps (along
the Holy Island).
If you are coming from the south, take the A1 motorway, then the A11 and
head towards the Capannori exit. Follow the signs for the SS 439 and
continue to Lucca, Borgo a Mozzano, Fornaci di Barga. Once there, follow
the signs for Barga on the SS 445.
If you arrive from the north, take the A1 motorway, then follow the
signs for
Genova-Livorno,
Viareggio
(a11). Exit at Lucca est and follow the signs for Lucca, Borgo a
Mozzano, Fornaci di Barga and finally Barga on the SS 445.
Arriving to
Barga by train
In Barga there is a
railway station, called Barga - Gallicano, located on the
Aulla-Lucca railway line and connected to
Pisa
(and therefore also to Pisa airport, see above). The only trains
to Barga then depart from Lucca or Pisa stations. There are
obviously more and more frequent trains from Lucca: the trips
are direct and it takes about 40-50 minutes and cost 4.30 euros.
Some solutions are available from Pisa Centrale but, in most
cases, you need to stop in Lucca to change train, although some
go directly to Barga (about 5 trains a day on weekdays). The
cost is €5.90 for both solutions, which will take you about 1
hour and 15 minutes (direct trains) and 1 hour and a half (or
even less) in the other case.
The station is
located about 11 minutes by bus from the center of Barga
and more precisely on the left bank of the River Serchio in
Mologno, on the road SR445 that leads to Barga, serves the
two centers of Barga and Gallicano, and is called the train
station of Barga-Galicano). You can also get there from
other Tuscan cities, including Pistoia and Florence, as well as
Lucca and Pisa.
There are two other railway stations near Barga:
Castelvecchio Pascoli station, a railway stop always on the
same Aulla-Lucca line and serving the town of Castelvecchio
Pascoli, a hamlet in the municipality of Barga, and the
Fornaci di Barga station, always a hamlet in the first,
further downstream. More information on costs and timetables on
the official
Trenitalia website.
Travelling to
Barga by bus
You may also decide to take a bus to get to Barga. The bus company is
called Vai Bus (from Lucca starting from Piazzale Verdi). There are
daily trips to Barga that depart mainly from Lucca (or from the newly
opened shopping centre in Marlia); it takes about an hour and there are
more or less 8 trips per day, depending on the week and the days of the
weekend (Bus Q05). It is strongly recommended to check the timetables
twice, especially if you plan to travel on weekends.
If you are already in Garfagnana, you will have other solutions to reach
Barga by bus: take bus Q59 from Pieve Fosciana, bus Q60 from Castelnuovo
and bus Q77 from Castelvecchio.
