How to get to Barga in Tuscany

Barga is one of the most important and largest towns of Garfagnana, a very picturesque medieval village that stands in a hilly position at 410 meters above sea level in the province of Lucca. The town has a population of 10,018 inhabitants and is the capital of the Media Valle del Serchio. For its particularity for several years Barga has entered the circuit of "the most beautiful villages in Italy", and is also "Orange Flag Touring Club Italian.

Immersed in a mountain backdrop and completely surrounded by lush forests, it offers an interesting destination that you should visit, especially if you love nature and all the outdoor activities that can be arranged in a place like this. It is a medieval village of rare beauty that rises in a hilly position, on the spurs of the Tuscan Emilian Apennines at 410 m. at sea level, halfway between the city of Lucca and the mountains of Garfagnana. A land where the italian poet Giovanni Pascoli was adopted, it has been awarded the prestigious tourist quality labels "One of the most beautiful villages in Italy", "Orange Flag Touring Club" and "Slow City",

Senza dubbio, a causa della sua posizione in Garfagnana, arrivare a Barga in auto è la soluzione più semplice, ma, se non avete la vostra auto o un veicolo a noleggio e preferiscono viaggiare con i mezzi pubblici, troverete qui di seguito alcuni consigli per arrivare in città anche in treno e in autobus.

Arrive in Barga by plane

The nearest airports to Barga are Pisa and Florence. Pisa Airport (PSA) is about an hour and a little more by car (about 70 km), also by train (see below), directed to Barga-Galicano and then by bus for 11 minutes to Barga center. The Pisan airport is very busy and has a high transit traffic. The number of airlines is substantial and increasing, for several Italian and European destinations. The airport of Florence (FLR), more distant than the previous one, about an hour and 30 by car (98 km), is connected with the A11 to Porcari (near Lucca), and from here with the SS12, while by train you need to get to Lucca, and from here in 40 minutes to the station of Barga-Gallicano, and again by bus to Barga center.

Arrive in Barga by car

Barga is well connected, with Lucca, the nearest major city, but also with other cities in Tuscany (Pisa, Florence, Pistoia among others). Arriving at Barga from Lucca take the state statale 12 and for about 38 km, passing along the various Ponte a Moriano, Borgo a Mozzano (where you should stop to visit the famous Devil's Bridge), Bagni di Lucca (just beyond the towns of Piano della Rocca and Fornoli); then continue along the SP 20 (Via Lodovica) and follow the SR 445 for Ponte all'Ania, touching the outskirts of Fornaci di Barga, and then Loppia (below and above), and finally the SP7 before arriving at Barga Vecchia. At the entrance of the historic center you will find several parking lots (see section Where to park in Barga).

Reaching Barga from the major Tuscan cities is equally easy, just get to Lucca and from there continue to Barga, so even if you were to arrive from Versilia or from places like Sarzana, in Liguria, unless you choose the path slightly more winding that joins the territory of the Apuan Alps (along the Holy Island).

If you are coming from the south, take the A1 motorway, then the A11 and head towards the Capannori exit. Follow the signs for the SS 439 and continue to Lucca, Borgo a Mozzano, Fornaci di Barga. Once there, follow the signs for Barga on the SS 445.

If you arrive from the north, take the A1 motorway, then follow the signs for Genova-Livorno, Viareggio (a11). Exit at Lucca est and follow the signs for Lucca, Borgo a Mozzano, Fornaci di Barga and finally Barga on the SS 445.

Arriving to Barga by train

In Barga there is a railway station, called Barga - Gallicano, located on the Aulla-Lucca railway line and connected to Pisa (and therefore also to Pisa airport, see above). The only trains to Barga then depart from Lucca or Pisa stations. There are obviously more and more frequent trains from Lucca: the trips are direct and it takes about 40-50 minutes and cost 4.30 euros. Some solutions are available from Pisa Centrale but, in most cases, you need to stop in Lucca to change train, although some go directly to Barga (about 5 trains a day on weekdays). The cost is €5.90 for both solutions, which will take you about 1 hour and 15 minutes (direct trains) and 1 hour and a half (or even less) in the other case.

The station is located about 11 minutes by bus from the center of Barga and more precisely on the left bank of the River Serchio in Mologno, on the road SR445 that leads to Barga, serves the two centers of Barga and Gallicano, and is called the train station of Barga-Galicano). You can also get there from other Tuscan cities, including Pistoia and Florence, as well as Lucca and Pisa.

There are two other railway stations near Barga: Castelvecchio Pascoli station, a railway stop always on the same Aulla-Lucca line and serving the town of Castelvecchio Pascoli, a hamlet in the municipality of Barga, and the Fornaci di Barga station, always a hamlet in the first, further downstream. Travelling to Barga by bus

You may also decide to take a bus to get to Barga. The bus company is called Vai Bus (from Lucca starting from Piazzale Verdi). There are daily trips to Barga that depart mainly from Lucca (or from the newly opened shopping centre in Marlia); it takes about an hour and there are more or less 8 trips per day, depending on the week and the days of the weekend (Bus Q05). It is strongly recommended to check the timetables twice, especially if you plan to travel on weekends.
If you are already in Garfagnana, you will have other solutions to reach Barga by bus: take bus Q59 from Pieve Fosciana, bus Q60 from Castelnuovo and bus Q77 from Castelvecchio.
