Impressive
neo-Gothic complex housing the Hungarian Parliament, the largest building in
Europe. In our article, history of the building, halls and must-see sights.
The
strongest administrative and tourist symbol of
Budapest and Hungary is the Parliament, a
large 19th century building located along the banks
of Pest on the
Danube.
The construction of the mighty structure began in
the aftermath of the Austro-Hungarian Agreement
in 1867, with the so-called Ausgleich
("compromise") between the Hungarian nobility and
the Habsburg monarchy aimed at reforming the
Austrian Empire born in 1804.
After this important formal act that sanctioned the almost Hungarian
independence, the Hungarian architect Imre Steindl was entrusted by
Emperor Franz Joseph and Prime Minister Tisza with the
construction of the new Hungarian Parliament. From the first glance at the
building, one can see the style of the British Parliament in London, which
inspired its neo-Gothic architecture, flanked by elements of Byzantine influence.
In
the year of its completion, 1902, it was the largest parliamentary building in
the world. It is said that the stairs housed inside the building have a total
length of 20 km. The interior rooms are 691. Inside the Parliament there is the
Sacred Crown, which is traditionally attributed to King Saint Stephen
(first king of Hungary) and which was used to crown the Hungarian kings from the
13th century. The origin of the crown dates back to the Byzantine era and
consists of two main parts: the Greek crown and the Latin crown. According to
the most credited theses, it was created during the reign of Béla III,
under the Byzantine influence. In 1945 it was entrusted in custody to the U. S.
government and kept in Fort Knox until 1978; it was then returned to the nation
by order of President Jimmy Carter and since 2000 it has been in the
Hungarian Parliament.
