Padiglioni Finca Güell a Barcellona

Fantasy and technical innovation merge in the former warehouses of the Finca Güell in Avinguda Pedralbes in Barcelona. The beauty and colour of the buildings do not eclipse the main protagonist of this particular union: the mythological giant dragon of the Garden of the Hesperides (the mythological garden where a tree of gold pomi trees grew), a synthesis of the symbolism and craftsmanship of Gaudí.

Casa Battlo BarcellonaThe desire of Eusebi Güell, a friend and patron of Gaudì whose name is known all over the world for his creations, was to expand his family's holiday home in Barcelona. This decision led to the first commission of Antoni Gaudì by the man who would become his main patron. Gaudí worked on the project from 1884 to 1887, with the renovation of the garden and the construction of the two concierge units, destined to be the home of the keeper and the stables. The perfect synthesis of innovation and decorative craftsmanship comes to life both in the buildings and in the magnificent wrought iron dragon door that connects them.

The concierge of Finca Güell has a stone base and parabolic brick arches with geometric ceramic decorations. On one side of the gate, a turret, crowned by vegetable motifs, has a medallion with the initial of the owner of the estate. In the middle, the famous dragon on the gate spreads its threatening bat wings, its forked tongue visible in its slit jaws. It represents the mythical dragon of the Garden of the Epererids, which commemorates the bold feat of Hercules, captured with great skill by the poet Jacint Verdaguer, an exponent of the Renaixença (Renaissance), a Catalan literary movement of the second half of the 19th century, in his epic work L' Atlàntida.

Through some photographs loaned to the Royal Gaudì Foundation in September 1983, donated by the Viscount of Güell, grandson of Eusebi Güell, today we know that Gaudí designed other elements for the estate, which have been preserved. These included: an open horse stables, a panoramic staircase on the roof of the house and a panoramic view over the parabolic arch next to the closing wall.
